Job Search Part Two – Resources for the Job Hunt

By SVU

After your resume has been perfected the next step is the job hunt. There are many websites that you can use to look for openings but I’m going to tell you some of my favorite websites that I go to when looking for a job:

  • SVU Job Center – Did you know that they have a vascular specific job center? The job center can be found under the “About” tab on the homepage. You can create a profile and post your resume to the job center. When creating your profile, you can set up email notifications based on certain job criteria.
  • Indeed.com – This site is truly a gem. You can filter by location and it will send you daily and weekly e-mails that show what job openings there are in your location. I am still subscribed to these so that I can forward on positions to alumni on Facebook.
  • Facebook – This might be specific to my school, but we have an alumni-only group where people who have graduated pass on information about job openings at their current jobs or jobs that they have heard about through the grapevine. If you don’t have a group like this, I would consider contacting someone to set it up or create the group yourself.
  • FlowNet – You can sign up to receive e-mails a lot of which are related to technical aspects and questions about our field. There are also a variety of forums and archives that you can check out. Every once in a while the emails include job postings or people posting that they are looking for work in a specific location.

I also applied directly to specific hospitals through their website but found that I rarely got a response back. If you do apply directly, I would recommend finding the contact information for the lab’s technical director or hiring manager and send them an e-mail, letter or call them on the phone. Let them know why you want to work for them and what you will add to their team.
